Gaim 已更名为 Pidgin

LinuxTOY消息：

Gaim 作为 Linux 下支持多种协议的即时消息软件，于日前正式更名为 Pidgin。在 Gaim 的网站上，披露了这次更名的原因——与 AOL 的冲突。

伴随着这次更名事件，Gaim 也从 SourceForge.net 迁移到了新的网站。据开发者表示，他们将很快发布 Pidgin 2.0.0 正式版。

Exaile 0.2.9

qBittorrent 0.9.0

LinuxTOY消息：

qBittorrent 这个 Bittorrent 下载客户端程序已由其项目开发团队发布了一个新的版本：0.9.0。据称，这是一个稳定版本。新版本引入了诸如 Peer 交换、自动完成、新的系统托盘弹出框、更好的国际化支持等特性。

同时，qBittorrent 0.9.0 基于最新的 libtorrent 0.12 和 Qt 4.2 而构建。其中的许多代码已得到重写，程序也得到了优化。另外，通过对 bug 的修正，也使 qBittorrent 更加稳定而可靠。

Suse 10.2, part 14: Even more video playback examples

Here's another screen capture, this time playing back two Quicktime movies of a pair of dramatic virtual flyovers of Mars. One was playing in Firefox, the other in VLC. For more details, read the complete story on New Scientist Space.

Suse 10.2, part 13: More video playback examples

Just a quick note about playing back current encoding types under Linux. The following screenshot shows Gnome's Totem (2.17.3) and VideoLAN's VLC (0.8.6) playing back the latest Harry Potter clip ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"). Not the exact same clip. Totem is playing back a QuickTime high resolution clip in the upper right corner, while VLC is playing back a Microsoft HD WMV clip below Totem. I haven't resized either application. The desktop is 1600 by 1200 resolution. I will note that Totem can play both clips, but it does not play back the HD WMV clip very well, dropping frames and loosing sync with the audio. VLC plays it back flawlessly.

I've tried this same experiment with Ubuntu 7.04, with the same two applications and the same two clips, and found that both Totem and VLC play the HD WMV clip without dropping frames. I can't speak to any audio issues, as the audio is broken again on the machine that is hosting Ubuntu.

The clips came from RottenTomatoes.

Keep in mind that this is all happening on a modest (!) Athlon XP 32-bit processor running at a paltry (!) 2GHz. The video card is an ancient (!) ATI 9700 Pro. And I've got a lot of other tasks running on the machine in the background. A person could do a lot worse than run Suse 10.2 or Ubuntu 7.04. They are two equally superb distributions capable of supporting the same top-notch applications and can provide equal quality experience to the end user.

Suse 10.2, part 12: Getting WMV video to work in Firefox, adding VLC

After getting Windows Media Video (WMV) to successfully play within Firefox on Ubuntu 7.04, I attempted to achieve the same functionality within Suse 10.2. I pretty much succeeded.

Installing WMV Playback

When you install Suse and attempt to play WMV from CNN's web site, you get the following dialog.

In order to successfully play back WMV, I installed xine-extra (optional Xine plugins). Everything else had already been installed according to Yast2. What follows is a screen shot of the plugin working.

What's interesting is that there are no controls on the plugin like there are under Ubuntu or Windows. I have no idea why.

Installing VLC

While I was trying to find the right combination of packages that would enable playback, I installed VideoLAN's VLC media player. You can find directions to do this at the VideoLAN site. There is, however, one additional step you need to take for Suse 10.2. You need to add the following repository to your Yast Installation Source:

http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse

That will allow VLC dependencies to be properly fulfilled.

Once VLC was installed I plopped my Serenity DVD in and checked out VLC's playback capabilities. What follows are some screen shots. Nothing spectacular. I just put them in there because I liked Firefly and Serenity.

Looks like I might just keep Suse around a little longer. I've still got lots to learn.

Suse 10.2, part 11: Playing YouTube trailers

Once again, just enthusing about the obvious for the rest of the computing world. This time, it's a YouTube video showcasing many of the new features of World Wind 1.4. I haven't had time to download and try out the latest World Wind release, but it looks quite tasty. And it's written in .Net 2.0. The .Net 2.0 release was finished by an open source crew using the free-as-in-beer Visual Studio Express. Here's a sad commentary:

So what is so great about 1.4? First of all it is written using .NET 2.0 which allows for some cool new features but more importantly, thanks to Microsoft allowing developers to use visual C# express for free we were able to easily increase the development team, who simply could not afford to purchase visual studio.

I'd also like to point out that the audio portion of every multimedia clip and movie I've played actually sounds better under Suse 10.2 on this old hardware than it does under Windows XP. I know that's highly subjective, but that's what it comes down to a lot of time. That's a far cry from Suse 10.2's inability to even use the audio on my Gateway M685 notebook. The difference? The system where audio works is using nVidia's nForce 2 chipset, while the Gateway is using Intel's 975 mobile chipset. It's a shame they don't make nForce 2 chips any more.

Suse 10.2, part 10: Playing trailers in Firefox

I'm going to post about a feature that users of Windows and the Mac have had for years: the ability to view movie trailers within their browsers. I don't know of any other distribution where this is successful. But on this computer in this house, I can view Real Audio encoded trailers. This ability, coupled with the installation of Flash Version 9 for Linux, considerably enhances the browsing experience under Suse 10.2.



I can't tell the difference between Flash 9 and Real Audio running inside of Firefox under Windows XP and Flash 9 and Real Audio running inside of Firefox 2 under Suse 10.2. That's on the exact same hardware (dual booting). Every time I hear someone or read someone's comments about how 'purity' needs to be maintained inside the 'free' software domain, I want to reach out and slap the crap out of them. Purity just means a crap existence under Linux.

I'm reaching a decision point in both my personal and professional life. Personally, I'm looking to replace my aging (three year old) Athlon XP-based system with something more current. I can DYI it with hardware from Newegg, like I did with this system; that means installing Windows XP (not Vista!) and/or Linux, specifically Suse. Or I can just buy a Mac. I bought an iMac for my youngest daughter who headed off to FSU this spring term. She's been quite happy, and hasn't had one problem. It's the first Mac she's ever owned. She's always had Windows systems before the Mac.

In the professional realm it's a lot more complex situation. The applications I help develop are built not just on an operating system, but on other applications as well. For example, one major subsystem I have to use on my program uses Windows and Office as its primary platforms. Guess what OS I'm going to use? The only other option from a professional standpoint is a pro-supported distribution (limited in my humble opinion to Redhat and Suse), Windows XP (again, not Vista!), or the Mac. And not necessarily in that order.

Cory Doctorow notwithstanding, the Mac makes a lot more sense than does Linux, even Ubuntu. I was hoping that Suse would actually lead the way to a decent, sane distribution, where everything important is in the box and works out of the box. But I don't think you can't get there from here, especially if you have (like Nicholas "I'm An Idiot" Petreley) the Linux rabble foaming at the mouth over Novell's deal with Microsoft. I look at Linux, Windows, and Apple, and see Apple as the least of three evils. Since I have to live within a budget, I'm not ready to go and scratch my personal Mac itch. So let's see how event unfold over the next few months.

Dolphin 与 Konqueror 所走的是一条不同的路线，它主要专注于 KDE 桌面环境中的文件管理，不像后者除了文件管理之外，也可作为网站浏览工具，甚至还有许多其他功能。在这个意义上，Dolphin 从优化用户界面入手，使其具有很高的可用性。
